NEW!  Alpine Wildflowers Workshop - Closed
August 6-8, 2010
Photographing Alpine Wildflowers presents particular rewards and challenges for photographic expression.  These diminutive beauties flourish high in the mountains among the rocks near and above timberline.  The magical beauty of the tiny alpine wildflowers fill a niche in the spectacular high mountains during high summer.  This makes a perfect time for capturing exceptional images in my 3-day refreshing photography workshop.

High on the Uinta Mountains of Northern Utah and on the western front of the Rocky Mountains In the Wasatch Range, wildflower variety abounds.  With the high desert mountains of the Great Basin close at hand coupled with the Rocky Mountain Flora and influences from the Columbia Basin also at play, northern Utah present wonderful opportunities for a unique mingling of wildflower species.

While the main emphasis of the workshop will be the many aspects of photographing diminutive wildflowers, the setting we will be working in also offers splendid mountain views and possible wildlife encounters.  We will take advantage of early light in the mountains.  Close-up and macro photography will be essential on many species and open fields of mixed and single species will be available for variety in practicing technique.

My wildflower workshop includes working at Bald Mountain in the High Uintah Mountains of Northern Utah.  In addition we will find a different selection of alpine wildflowers on the scree slopes of Hidden Peak and adjacent areas of the high Wasatch Mountains above Salt Lake City, Utah.

Limited class size allows personal instruction in a vacation atmosphere.  We will consider preparation, subject selection, visualization, composition for expression, special attention to close-up technique and useful equipment.  Available natural light will be emphasized.  We will also study the photographic process from a general naturalist perspective and environmental sensitivity.  Important to the photographic process is a sense of passion and fun.  Participants are encouraged to engage the subject for a personal exploration to reflect their emotional response in each image and enjoy the total experience of field photography.

Location Information
The Rocky Mountains form a rugged, high altitude barrier from New Mexico through Western Canada. Many beautiful and unique habitats in this great mountain range serve a wide variety of wildflowers. On North America's greatest East-West trending mountain range, the Uinta Mountains, and the Wasatch Range gathers a great variety of wildflower species in a locality of alpine splendor. Both areas offer superb accessibility, ample opportunities for photographing a myriad of wildflowers on open mountain sides and craggy scree rock gardens.

We will be able to photograph many varieties of Columbine, Lupine, Daisies, Saxifrage, Stonecrop, Paintbrush, owl clover and much, much more. Among the summer flowering varieties that favor moist sites is the richly colored Parry Primrose.

Join Marv Poulson in mid-summer (August 6-8, 2010) to delve into part of this area for a visual treat and memorable vacation-style workshop for great high mountain wildflower photography.
