New
Sculptures
Completed: 'Standing Wave' and 'Swashing'.
I have just
completed
two new stone sculptures. One I call
'Standing Wave',
which emerged from an elongated Mogollon
Basalt
boulder requiring a gentle touch to work the
form
because the stone resists working with
percussion
tools so I had to use direct grinding
techniques
lest the piece fracture uncontrollably. 'Standing Wave', emerged requiring a
gentle sculpting touch to work the form, finished to a fine
surface,
sculpted to suggest a rising wave.
Completing the creative
solution, I chose a mounting on a triangular
stand of
weathered steel.
The second piece I
call ‘Swashing'. It emerged from a
challenging
piece of Picasso Marble to form a figurative
splash
against the shore as a metaphor of evolving
shape
derives from the confusion of lines and
transitions
in the stone. Hidden fractures in the stone
manifested throughout my direct sculpting
requiring
creative conceptual adjustments to achieve a
satisfying solution. The finished form is
presented using stainless steel in basalt on
hardwood.
