Archival Natural Color Photography
Working exclusively in natural light, I emphasize natural surrealism
while engaging the emotions evoked by the natural realm, especially the
mystery or magical essence of light-play in the world. Photography
provides me an expressive channel that transcends traditional language
where the transitory quality of light exceeds to endure. My pictures
emerge through imagination, emotion, and experience with the interaction
between light and subject supported by a keen interest in natural
history. Extending my pursuit of authentically imaging the essence of
light-subject interaction, I personally make all of my photographs and
create individual, archival color pigment prints.
I seek not only to capture the physical realm, but go
beyond to expressive interpretation. The world experienced through the
lens is where I encounter the intimacy of natural surrealism face to
face in communion for the deeper beauties of reality. Making photographs
combine my sources and references to bring imagination, light, nature,
time and space together with a transcendence to reality for me. I make
ethereally beautiful natural images depicting that nether realm between
fantasy and reality. My images rarely refer to a specific location. They
may point to places both distant, and nearby, while reaching to engage
the viewer more with aesthetic essence than drama. While it is
ultimately true that I make my pictures somewhere and of something,
those realities play superficially in my art. They simply are facts of
the piece, just as paper, canvas, dye, or other materials. Light and how
I perceive it and record the interaction in the natural world form my
art.
My photographs originate using vintage and advanced
modern cameras to image what I see in nature. Capturing what I see in
the camera remains primary in my work, I strive to match the natural
image for direct color printing. Using archival color pigment digital
printing techniques and materials, I create luminous prints with full
natural color and tonal depth on acid free, 100% cotton fiber, fine art
paper. This allows me to create individual, finished photographs
faithful to the natural image and of heirloom quality, in signed and
numbered editions. Finishing each print includes museum mattes and solid
natural cherry or white maple framing.
