Nine Mile Hunt Ancient Rock Art Panel
Nine
Mile Canyon in Utah's Book Cliffs played prominently in
the lives of early people. A perennial stream
allowed farming in the wide canyon and a secure travel
route through the country. Many rock art panels
mark events from that time along the cliffs for more
than 25 miles. Unusual panels depicting water
birds and complex human figures are unique to this
beautiful rock art gallery. Nine Mile, as it is
locally known, may hold one of the greatest
concentrations of ancient rock art in the world. Some ancient rock art images
clearly depict a story. The Nine Mile Hunt Panel
may depict a great hunt expressed in very reverent and
traditional terms. This exceptionally well
preserved petroglyph catches sun light only briefly in
late morning when the figures and rock texture stand out
prominently.
