NEW!
for 2008 - Personalized Location Photography Workshops - On
Your Schedule
You choose the location,
season and schedule and I will create a stimulating,
personalized photography workshop tailored to your
wishes. I have a few general suggestions below
where we might find the special balance for seeking
photographic experiences of unique depth and enjoyment.
Example locations:
-
Perhaps the
greatest landmark in the country, Grand Canyon National Park hold
within its bounds canyons and cliffs of such immensity as to defy
photographic rendering. Challenges and opportunities for both
exploration and image making reach an almost overwhelming scale in
this amazingly divers and beautiful part of Northern Arizona.
-
Butler Wash
in Southeastern Utah where many remote ancient rock art panels and
ruins remain seldom visited or photographed.
-
The Green
River Lakes region of the Wind River Mountains of North-central
Wyoming where wilderness, high Rocky Mountain peaks form the head
waters of the Green River.
-
North Fork
in South-central Utah where numerous slot canyons slice into the
sandstone walls.
-
Challenges
of environment & lighting often make the Great Sand Dunes of
South-central Colorado one of the most intriguing desert-scapes to
explore photographically.
-
Photographing great trees holds a special place in my photographic
experience. Be it in the high remote reaches of Eastern
Nevada's Snake Range where wonderful ancient Bristlecone Pines cling
to a Spartan life, or the primeval coastal forests of northern
California, where the immense Coast Redwoods tower, the trees draw
me. The greatness of such subjects and the wonderful diversity
of all that surrounds them makes for a timeless photographic
adventure.
-
Coyote
Buttes on the west end of the Vermillion Cliffs in Northern Arizona
defy description of the swirling layers of sandstone.
-
Making
photographs of iconic scenes brings special opportunities for
creative photographic points of view as with the immense waterfalls
of the Yellowstone River in the eminently popular Yellowstone
National Park.
-
Escalante
slot canyons formed in South-central Utah by narrow cracks in the
domed sandstone slopes feeding the Escalante River.
-
Season can
make a great contribution to photographic out comes in many
locations, non more than in Grand Teton or Zion National Park.
Here each time of year brings unique opportunities of special
photographic note.
-
In every
expansive location, opportunities for unique close-up or
macro-photography with views open
especially creative approaches, requiring only patients and vision
to render in a photographic sense.
-
One of my
personal passions remains seeking and photographing wildflowers in
the field. Often, I have pursued especially rare or endangered
species. This quest sometimes takes years to complete an image
as nature has a schedule we can only guess at.
-
Ancient
rock art follows paths seldom trodden today as in Chaco Canyon of
North-western New Mexico where ancient people created one of the
most advanced cultures and stunning remnants in the West.
-
Then there
is Nine Mile Canyon where thousands of ancient rock art panels were
created on the sandstone cliffs, many with seemingly vivid stories
to tell.
After we determine your

"Skill to
do comes of doing."
--Ralph Waldo Emerson |
I enjoy teaching the art of
photography rather than just the nuts and bolts of the craft.
But I'm especially interested in helping students develop their
own style, their own way of expressing their emotional response
to the subject on location in spectacular, exhilarating
settings. Gaining confidence and proficiently in
expressing personal response requires understanding and
familiarity with your equipment and photographic image making. In all of my workshops,
intimate color landscape
and special subject photography emphasize exploration in a close
instructional field setting. I especially like to
work one-on-one to minimize distractions and optimal personal interaction in a relaxed
setting.
Each participant may choose a flexible course
of study both in time and instructional involvement. The free exchange
of information and ideas are important throughout each workshop.
We can
work with Digital techniques or Film - including view
camera technique if you wish. Together, you will be able
to practice and develop new skills and vision in the natural
realm.
